Composer and drummer Tetyana Haraschuk is an original. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine to Ukrainian and Cuban parents and currently based in Winnipeg, Tetyana was raised with strong values that have continued to influence her life and work. Her commitment to hard work, kindness, frugality, and simplicity combine with her natural sensitivity and gift for storytelling and come through in her music - intricately textured, rhythmically detailed, incorporating moods ranging from delicate to aggressive, and always deeply felt.
Immigrating to Canada with her family at the age of eight gave Tetyana more opportunities to follow her inquisitive nature and study music, first with piano lessons and then drums. She discovered jazz music in high school and, after meeting drummer Quincy Davis at jazz camp, was inspired to pursue music further. Davis and saxophonist Jon Gordon became pillars in her music education at the University of Manitoba, where she earned a bachelor's degree in jazz performance.
Going on to earn a master's degree in contemporary performance and production from Berklee College of Music, Tetyana independently released her debut album, a chamber jazz suite of original music entitled The Intentions of Honesty, Kindness, and Perseverance, in 2021. An EP, Someone You've Never Been, followed in 2023. Tetyana has also independently released two singles, played with her trio across several countries, including Spain and Brazil, written commissioned works for the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, among others, and served as sessional instructor of jazz drumset at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Music.
Her latest project, as artistic director and composer of Until The Sun Comes, is a true labour of love, drawing on personal interviews with individuals directly affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Until The Sun Comes is a musical documentation of Ukrainian war stories, made in collaboration with Winnipeg-based Ice River Films and their production of the documentary Voices of Freedom. Tetyana's interviews with Ukrainian war survivors that directly inspired the music of Until The Sun Comes were, in turn, the inspiration for Sam Karney and Andrew Wiens of Ice River Films to produce a film documenting this process. Voices of Freedom premieres on CBC TV's Absolutely Canadian on August 17 at 8pm CT in Manitoba and is available to stream on CBC Gem beginning August 16. The album Until The Sun Comes is released on Spotify on August 16.
